Before we got up, someone went through our stuff
And smashed it to pieces all over the floor
A couple of strangers who looked just like us
Got out of hand and tore the place up
Path of destruction from here to the bedroom door

Meanwhile, we slept and dreamed of vacation
Some warm destination where the drinks were big and cheap
And even the wind was kind blowing up off the beach at night
A whole different storyline under our feet

The carpet’s a mess, there’s no help for that
We’ll never get the deposit back now
A hole in the wall the shape of your fist
A bracelet of bruises around my wrist
And we slept through all of this somehow

Somehow we slept and dreamed of vacation
Some warm destination where the drinks were big and cheap
And even the wind was kind blowing up off the beach at night
A whole different storyline under our feet

Love was here when we moved in but kept its distance
Took one look at us and backed away
We hung the towels and organized the kitchen
But love was scared of us, love was scared of us

This morning’s light is too hard and too bright
The whole mess is lit up and about to burn down
It wasn’t quite home, and it wasn’t quite love
We’re left in the wreck of whatever it was
And we have to crawl out from under it now

But why can’t we sleep just a little longer?
Dream of Baja or Florida where everything’s cheap
And even the wind is kind blowing up off the beach at night
We’ll leave a whole different storyline under our feet
A whole different storyline under our feet
